After I completed my Orthopaedic training here in W.A. in 2001 I travelled to Sydney to undergo further Fellowship training in sports knee surgery and knee arthroplasty with Leo Pinczewski at the Mater Hospital. I also worked with Bill Walter Senior also at the Mater Hospital doing a ‘mini-Fellowship’ in hip arthroplasty.

My private practice is located at St John of God Hospital Murdoch (in the Wexford Centre) and I operate at St John of God Murdoch, Murdoch Surgicentre, Mount Hospital and Rockingham General Hospital. I also regularly visit and operate in the Kimberly (especially Kununurra).

Since I have returned to Perth I have concentrated my practice south of the river and worked at Fremantle Hospital for 11 years (two as Head of Department of Orthopaedics) and have also worked at Armadale Hospital, Peel Health Campus and Rockingham Family Hospital (now Waikiki Private).

Although knee replacement is an excellent operation and does provide very good results with pain relief and decreased disability, there are risks and potential complications. I am a firm believer in attempting good non-operative treatment before proceeding with knee replacement. Often this takes the form of exercise, such as cycling and getting in the pool, as well as physiotherapy, anti-inflammatory medications and aiming for weight loss.

I have many years experience in primary hip replacement surgery. After a long series of cemented hip replacements (Exeter) I moved to Smith & Nephew ANTHOLOGY which uses a ceramicised metal head (Oxinium).

This hip replacement with the ceramicised metal on poly bearing surface has the best results in the Australian Hip Registry. At this stage I do not believe patients will get a better result with metal-on-metal hip replacement, ceramic-on-ceramic hip replacements or anterior approach surgery.

My mission as an Orthopaedic Surgeon is to use my experience and expertise to help the people who come to see me with their problems. I see it as my job to get people back to their sport, their exercise and lifestyle. Sometimes this involves precision ACL reconstructive surgery or knee replacement and at other times people need further non-operative treatment with physiotherapy and more time for their knee problem to settle down. This is often the case with torn cartilages in the knee for which I believe there is no rush to have an operation.

Obviously one of my major jobs is to relieve pain, in particular hip and knee replacements are amongst the most successful operations ever invented for relieving pain and suffering. One of my jobs is to cautiously choose proven prostheses and surgical techniques and to avoid surgical ‘fads and fashions’.

I am happily married to Sarah and we have four children. My interests outside of work and family include fitness (cycling and CrossFit), health and nutrition as well as travel and reading.
