Preparing for surgery
Before your surgery
When you are booked for surgery you are beginning your surgical journey with us and we will be with you each step of the way.
The consent form is also the admission form necessary for the hospital to arrange your admission. This is usually completed before you leave your appointment.
We will book the surgery.
You may also be asked to consider pre-surgery physiotherapy. See more here.

Day Procedure Unit
If you are having joint replacement surgery you will also be given a body wash with instructions about using it the night before and the morning of your surgery. You will also be given a pack containing useful information about your surgery. Please take some time to read through this. Contact the office if you have any questions.
Your pack will also contain instructions for fasting and information about admission times.
Day patients and patients not having a joint replacement
Day patients and patients who are not having a joint replacement will be contacted by the hospital. If you are to have any investigations prior to surgery (blood tests or ECG) we will give instructions about these.
Patients having a joint replacement
If you are having joint replacement, you will first attend an appointment at the pre-admission clinic, usually in the week prior to your surgery. The receptionist from pre-assessment will call you to make this appointment which will either be in their clinic or a telephone interview.
In the pre-assessment clinic one of our highly skilled nurses will then meet with you to review your questionnaire and will then perform an examination. Depending on your age and medical conditions, investigations such as blood tests and an ECG may be ordered. This information, together with your referral letter, will be sent to your anaesthetist for review. The nurse will also give instructions about any special equipment that you will need to have ready when you return home after surgery.
Your surgeon may ask you to have pre-surgery physiotherapy and this can be done at the time of your pre-assessment.
Once surgery is booked we will only call if there are changes to the schedule.
The anaesthetists used by our surgeon will call you the night before surgery and discuss the procedure. In certain circumstances, they may arrange to see you in their clinic. Most of the anaesthetists used by Mr Witte do arrange a consultation prior to surgery.

Admission
All patients for surgery are now admitted through the day surgery unit, even if you are staying overnight or coming for joint replacement surgery. You will be transferred to a ward after your surgery.
For day procedures, please bring an overnight bag in case you need to stay the night. Do not bring any valuables or jewellery as there is limited place for safe storage whilst you are in theatre. Please remove nail varnish.

Surgicentre admission
Staff from Surgicentre will contact you 1–2 days prior to surgery. This is a day surgery unit, so you will need to arrange transport to return home following the procedure.
After surgery
Please ask nursing staff for wound instructions before you leave the ward. We will give instructions regarding your post-op follow up.
Following your surgery you will need to arrange transport as you will not be permitted to drive.
If you have had joint replacement surgery you will need to have someone at home for the first 48 hours after returning home.
